From Hackathon Project to Kingdom Venture
Breeze Translate was born out of a desire to see God's message connect across language barriers. The project came into being at a Kingdom Code Build hackathon, a gathering focused on creating technology for Christian ministry. What started as a weekend project has grown into a powerful tool for the global church, developed and maintained entirely by an amazing team of talented, faith-filled volunteers.
Breeze Translate is spearheaded by Mike Ashelby, who serves as the Product Lead. The inspiration for the project struck when Mike saw two Iranian members of his own church — a man and his mother-in-law — struggling to connect with the service. The mother-in-law spoke no English, and while her son-in-law could converse, he found it impossible to follow and translate the sermon for her in real-time.
Seeing their isolation and the immense potential of a tool he encountered at the hackathon, Mike was driven by a clear mission: to make this technology accessible to every church, ensuring no one is left out because of a language barrier.
A Note on Our Name
The project was originally named 'De Babel', a reference to the Tower of Babel story in Genesis 11, with the initial idea of 'undoing' the division of languages. However, after reflection, the name was changed to better capture the project's theological heart. The name 'Breeze Translate' was chosen to reflect the story of Pentecost in Acts 2. The mission isn't to reverse what happened at Babel, but to participate in the new work of the Holy Spirit, who came like a mighty rushing wind or 'breeze' to supernaturally bridge language divides and unite people through a shared understanding of the Gospel.
